How Often to Water Chinese Evergreen?
It’s critical not to underwater or overwater Chinese Evergreens. The amount of watering required will vary depending on several factors.
The Chinese Evergreen plant prefers moist but not wet soil.
This rhythm can be maintained throughout the spring, summer, and fall while decreasing the frequency in winter.
Low water conditions are tolerable for Chinese Evergreens but should never be scorched for long periods.
Sticking to a strict watering schedule is one of the most common errors. Watering on the same day every week could be harmful rather than beneficial.
Factors that Impact Watering Chinese Evergreen
Various factors, including the type of plant, the soil, the weather, the time of year, and other factors, influence water requirements in Chinese Evergreen.
I’ve compiled a list of some of the things that I believe will be of use.
The Pot that You Use
Because Chinese Evergreen is a fast-growing plant, use a large pot with a minimum of 5 liters. Maintain a pot size that is proportional to the plant.
Plant your Chinese Evergreen in a pot with plenty of drainage holes at the bottom.
Soil for the Plant
Watering and suitable soil are necessary for the Chinese Evergreen’s growth.
Your plant’s soil must hold enough water to keep it lightly moist. It should, however, be able to quickly drain excess water so that root rot isn’t a problem.
A peat-based potting soil with extra perlite is recommended, but a bark-based orchid mix can also be used. The soil itself should be nitrogen-rich but loose and not compacted.
Aglaonema growers should use lightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.6 – 6.5.
The Light it Gets
Although Chinese Evergreens can tolerate bright indirect sunshine, direct sunlight can scorch the foliage.
This indoor plant will thrive if you keep it in the shade of curtains or drapes.
Chinese Evergreens that are dark green may grow in near-shade, whereas variegated kinds demand more intense light.
Quality of Water
Chinese Evergreens are sensitive to metals and minerals in tap water and experience health problems if you only use it. Continuously have distilled water on hand.
If at all possible, avoid using calcareous water.
Plant Location
Always place your Chinese Evergreen away from frost and direct sunlight during the day.
If you’re growing it inside, you can use just about anything. It thrives in indirect sunlight or medium-to-low-light environments.
This houseplant will thrive if placed on a desktop and lit by fluorescent lights.
During the winter, a south or west-facing window would be ideal, whereas, during the summer, a north or east-facing window would be preferred.
However, ensure your Chinese Evergreen isn’t near windows or vents that blow cold air.
Temperature and Humidity Level
Some growers consider Chinese Evergreen a greenhouse plant because of its high humidity requirements.
Warmer temperatures with some humidity are better for these plants than freezing and dry situations below 65°F.
Keep your Chinese Evergreen away from cold-breathing windows or vents — the warmer the setting, the better.
Mist your plant frequently to improve humidity levels, and try placing it in a humid-prone part of your home, such as your kitchen or bathroom.
If your environment is arid, a tiny space humidifier can be placed near your plant to help it thrive.
Watering Requirements in Different Seasons
You should water Chinese Evergreen frequently in hotter, drier climates or throughout the growing season.
In the summer, water Chinese Evergreens once every seven to ten days and once every two weeks in the winter.
The Best Watering Technique
Because the Chinese Evergreen is a tropical plant, you need to water it as soon as the top layer of soil dries.
Use distilled or tap water left out overnight to allow chlorine and other potentially dangerous chemicals to evaporate.
Because it’s crucial not to overwater this plant, ensure proper drainage and do not submerge your plant in water.
You can always use your fingertips to scratch the soil’s surface to see whether it’s dry and water when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.
Also, never let the soil dry out more than 25-30% of the way down the pot before thoroughly watering.
How Much Water Does the Chinese Evergreen Plant Need?
When the light is more intense during the summer, Chinese Evergreen may require more frequent watering than during the off-season.
Chinese Evergreen plants can survive dry soil if you forget to water it. But that doesn’t mean that you should ignore its requirements.
If your plant is only exposed to fluorescent light, wait until the soil is nearly dry before watering.
If you have the same watering schedule all year, you’ll likely have overwatering issues in the winter.
Editor’s Note
The term “watering” may not be as straightforward as it appears, as you should consider several factors.
You should have a relatively low-maintenance plant as long as you don’t overwater your plant, which is the most common way to destroy these lovely plants.
After reading the article, I hope you will be more aware of many factors and keep all these in mind before watering.
