How Tall Do Ranunculus Grow? [Understanding Height]

Ranunculus are sometimes annual but mostly perennial flowering plants that grow tall enough to have them both indoors and outdoors.

Generally, Ranunculus attains a height of about 8 to 25 inches and a spread of 12 to 18 inches. The size of the plant, however, depends on the variety of Buttercups you have.

Moreover, several external factors like temperature, light, and the bulb’s health decide the growth rate.

How Fast Do Ranunculus Grow?

Ranunculus are a cold-season flowering plant originating from mid-Asia and later spreading to Europe and the rest of the world.

The genus Ranunculus, commonly known as Buttercups, includes more than 500 species and is one of the popular April flowers that thrive in full shades.

Generally, Ranunculus blooms within 80-90 days after planting. However, it’s rare to find blooms during the first year.

The flower looks like origami art with tissue thin-petal in colors like white, yellow, orange, red, and pink, lasting 6-8 days.

You may deadhead the spent flower to redirect the energy for prolonged blooming throughout the season, which is over a month in mid-spring.

Although belonging to the same family, each Ranunculus has its unique bloom shade.

But as the temperature decreases below 20°F, plants start losing vegetation, and the blubs go dormant.

Sometimes, winter may be cruel and damage the bulb having the potential to multiply into several tubers and produce a new plant.

Needless to worry, Ranunculus returns yearly as long as you satisfy its care requirement.

This perennial behavior in Buttercups is mostly seen in those re-growing from the tubers left in the ground from previous seasons.

Why is Ranunculus So Small?

Some varieties of Buttercups, like Ranunculus Sprinkle Dwarf, are genetically curated to be a compact version of the normal ones.

Other than that, if your tall Ranunculus is struggling to grow, you must identify the problem and immediately head toward solving them.

  • Overcrowding: Ranunculus congested in a space can limit their access to resources such as sunlight, water, and space, causing a lack of development in the plant.
  • Unhealthy bulbs: Since most Buttercups start from the corm, an unhealthy or poor-quality bulb results in weak stems, sparse foliage, reduced vigor, and failure to flower.
  • Insufficient sunlight: Buttercups prefer full sun to partial shade to thrive and reach their full potential. Failing to receive ample light can stunt their growth and result in smaller plants. You may have to use artificial grow light when the winter is extreme.
  • Inadequate watering: Overwatering in Ranunculus damages their root and gradually rot them. While underwatering stresses the plant, turning them dry and wilted.
  • Pests or disease infestation: Pests like aphids and snail feed on the leaves and damage them, which often becomes the gateway to disease spread. Diseases like fungal infection take over entire plant health, disrupting the plant’s growth. Use neem oil to remove pests and diseases.

How Big Do Ranunculus Grow?

The herbaceous Ranunculus grows indoors and outdoors, though the ones in your garden appear fuller and healthy.

But the average height of the plant ranges from 20 to 60 cm (8 to 25 inches) with a spread of about 30 to 45 cm (12 to 18 inches). Some tall varieties of Ranunculus can also grow up to 90 cm (36 cm).

However, the growth has more to do with the species chosen, its growing conditions, overall health, and the care requirement.

So, here are some common varieties of ranunculus with their measurements.
